Bees in Minecraft

The Minecraft world has been abuzz with the arrival of bees too the game. You can only find them in the latest snapshot build, as they have not yet been released into the full official game. But they’re here, and they’re adorable!

So what are bees? They are neutral mobs that you will find in Plains, Sunflower Plains, and Flower Forest biomes. They spawn in small groups around bee nests and bee hives. Bee nests are the naturally created homes, which can be found hanging from birch and oak trees. Bee hives are the player-crafted versions.

Bees generally fly around their nests, but are also attracted to small flowers. A bee will follow you if you’re holding a small flower in your hand.

After they circle a flower for a while, they will collect pollen, which they then spread over nearby plants. This includes crops. If a bee pollinates a crop, it will advance to the next stage of growth. So planting small flowers near your crops is a good strategy to attract bees and make the crops grow faster.

Minecraft Bee - Gathering Pollen

A busy bee gathers pollen from flowers planted on the roof of a small house in Minecraft.

Just like in real life, bees will generally leave you alone if you don’t bother them. But if you attack one, they will swarm and fight back. They will also swarm and attack if you destroy their nest or collect honeycomb or a honey bottle from it.

To collect honeycomb and honey bottles without provoking the bees, place a campfire underneath the nest. The smoke prevents the bees from attacking.

When bees attack you, they do damage with their stingers and poison you. Unfortunately for the bees, they die about a minute after losing their stingers.

Bees are only found out and about during daytime and fair weather. When night falls, or when it starts raining, bees will return to their nest or hive.

The bees will arrive in the Java version of Minecraft soon. Until then, if you want to see them, you need to have snapshot enabled and launch Minecraft with the snapshot version. Until then, you can build up excitement with one of the many bee skins popping up.
